Healthy Living: Start with the Basics

Most of us should make some lifestyle changes to improve our health, such as watching our weight, and there are lots of positive things that we can do that will make a difference. Most of us are aware of the five a day maxim, but do you know that just 400g of fruit and veg a day can seriously reduce the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and strokes.

Too much salt and saturated fat in a diet can also make you three times more susceptible to these diseases, as can drinking too much alcohol. Other long-term problems associated with too much booze include cancers and heart attacks.

Giving up smoking have immediate health benefits. After just 20 minutes, your blood pressure and heart rate will start to stabilise, and after 24 hours your lungs will begin to get rid of the rubbish in there. Keep it up, and you will actually add years to your life!

Watch out for too much stress; not only is this debilitating but it can also lead to serious health issues, such as high blood pressure and depression. Look for ways in which you can relax and have some more ‘me’ time.
